Like the major in ecology and evolutionary biology, the general biology program focuses on the history, development, and interaction of living organisms on this planet. It provides a broader background, covering molecular, cellular, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary biology. Majors also study species evolution, the effect of environmental pressures on evolution, patterns of biological diversity, and species interaction within a given ecosystem.General biology prepares students for careers in a number of fields including field biology, environmental biology, physiology, botany, zoology, dentistry, and medicine. A teaching major is also offered, leading to certification to teach in Arizona public schools.
major requires math beyond general education requirements, but not beyond basic calculus; includes statistics, trigonometry, finite math, calculus or some combination of these courses.
