The program focuses on the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and their relations with their Mediterranean neighbors. Two emphases are offered: ancient civilization and ancient languages (Greek or Latin). All majors must achieve fourth-semester proficiency in either Greek or Latin and select courses in the art and archaeology, literature, culture, history and philosophy of these two civilizations. Students interested in graduate school in classics should emphasize advanced reading in Greek or Latin. A teaching major in Latin is also offered, leading to certification to teach in secondary schools in Arizona and throughout the United States.
